Meet our 2021 Interns

Summer 2021 Interns

  • My name is Eleanor Wellman and I am attending Western Washington University in Washington State. I am majoring in Environmental Studies with focuses on Environmental Education and Geography. I am minoring in International Studies and Psychology. At Western, I am a member of the WWU Water Polo club team and Viking pep band. I am currently the headguard and a swim lessons instructor at the Whatcom Family YMCA. Next year I will be studying abroad in New Zealand for a semester and WOOFING throughout Oceania. I love swimming, hiking, and rock climbing in my free time.
  • Beth attends Bridgewater College. She is double majoring in Global Studies and History/Political Science. On campus, Beth works in the Forrer Learning Commons as a desk assistant, the Writing Center as a tutor, in the Global Studies department as a tutor, and in Student Life as an orientation leader. She is also engaged in Women at Work, the women's issues club on campus, and Model United Nations as a delegate. Beth works at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park in Williamsport, MD, with campers of all ages. She hopes to pursue a career in global politics with a focus on global environmental issues. In her spare time, Beth enjoys spending time with her sisters and drawing.
  • Autumn attends Northern Illinois University. She is majoring in Environmental Studies with an emphasis in energy. She hopes to pursue a career as a sustainability specialist. Autumn enjoys volunteering at The Barn on Baseline where she gets to interact with animals in need and also spending time with family and her dog Frankie. 
  • Elias is a rising Junior at Lafayette College in Easton, PA. He is majoring in International Affairs with a Minor in Economics. His concentration for his major is Global Environmental Studies. On-campus, Eli works as a Peer Captain for International Orientation for the International Student Association. He is also heavily involved in Acapella as a member of the all-male acapella group: "The Lafayette Chorduroys", as well as the Secretary of Spikeball club. Eli has spent many hours in his home city of Manila, Philippines doing volunteer work at NGOs that focus on socio-environmental development, such as Gawad Kalinga. In his free time, Eli enjoys making music and traveling. 
  • Emma attends American University. She is majoring in International Relations with a focus on environmental sustainability and social justice. Emma works for Tatte Bakery and is actively engaged in AU outdoors club and Alpha Chi Omega. Emma has enjoyed her studies in the School of International Service and looks forward to pursuing a career in environmental justice. Emma enjoys spending her time outdoors with friends. 
  • Gaby is a recent graduate from Western Washington University with a degree in Environmental Studies with a focus on Geography and Policy, and has a minor in Anthropology. She is passionate about pursuing a career in global sustainable development. Gaby loves travelling, hiking and cooking in her spare time. ​

  • Janet is a first year Master of Urban Planning student at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, with a focus on social justice. Before graduate school, she worked as a teaching and research assistant and later an architect. She is passionate about feminism, planning for the marginalized, sustainable community planning, regional and urban revitalization, and community resilience in developing countries. As such, she presented her poster on “Alternative Sources of Livelihood for Women and Youth in Ada Foah, Ghana” at the Global Youth advancement summit held in Michigan State University. She was also part of a panel on the discussion “Making the World Equitable: The role of Girls and Women in Sustainable Development”. She looks forward to an exciting career in planning and research, where she can effectively contribute to addressing global inequalities.
  • Hannah is a rising sophomore at American University. She is majoring in Religion with a strong interest in ethics and is an active member of AUCatholic. Hannah enjoys exploring medicine and the environment within their faith contexts and hopes to pursue a career in this field. Originally from Bermuda, Hannah grew up participating in many of the island’s environmental campaigns. One of her favorite activities is to go paddle boarding to count sea turtles while looking for those with boat injuries. When Hannah is not studying in Washington D.C., she can be found caring for her retired horse, “Louie."

  • Maria attends Colby College. She is majoring in Environmental Policy and is minoring in Economics. On-campus, Maria works for her college’s environmental group on their Environmental Justice team and is actively involved in her college’s club dance team. Maria has worked with many young students as a tutor and mentor and plans to pursue a career in environmental policy. In her free time, Maria enjoys cooking with her family and learning new dance routines. 
  • Nash attends Saint Mary’s College of California where he is an Honors Student majoring in Global Studies with a minor in Theology and Religious Studies. He is actively engaged in International Club, Native American and Indigenous Student Association, Green Gaels, and tending the SMC Legacy Garden. Nash is working as a Social Justice Advocate for the SMC Intercultural Center. He has volunteered with many community organizations, provided educational tutoring, and is involved with social justice and environmental issues. Nash enjoys spending time with friends and family, attending cultural festivals, and travelling. 
  • Ilesia was born in Puerto Rico but raised in St.Kitts & Nevis and St. Thomas. In 2015 she moved to Brooklyn, NYC. I attend Connecticut College, I am double majoring in Africana Studies and Psychology. On campus I work for the Office of Residential Education and Living, Oasis Snackshop, Athletic Center/Fitness Center, Student Patroller for Campus Safety. Outside of the classroom, I am on the Eclipse e-board team as the events coordinator, I am a part of the UMOJA club (Black Student Union club), Women of Color Collective, baseball club, volleyball club and Journey's Mentorship Program. During my free time, I enjoy listening to music, reading, dancing, and outdoor activities. I was always interested in the topic of environmental justice since high school and have always wanted to learn more about it. Growing up I was surrounded by nature, green spaces and agrarian environments. I believe that everyone should have access to information regarding environmental resources. My intended future profession is to become a social worker or clinical psychologist. 
  • Jai attends Columbia University where he is majoring in Sustainable Development and Comparative Literature. On campus Jai works as a staff writer for The Blue and White Magazine and is actively engaged in Matriculate College Advising. Jai is interested in global sustainability and environmental education and hopes to pursue a career in environmental law. Jai can typically be found outside hiking, running, reading, and spending time with friends and family.
  • Holly is a rising junior attending the University of Michigan. She is majoring in Economics and International Studies with a focus on sustainable development. Holly recently finished working as a research assistant to a doctoral candidate where she analyzed the efficacy of a sustainable development project in rural Madagascar funded by the United Nations' 2016 Paris Climate Agreement. Holly is also proficient in French and wishes to pursue careers in international affairs or sustainable development. In her free time Holly enjoys painting, mountain biking, and upcycling clothing.
  • ​Rachel attends Stockton University in New Jersey. She is pursuing a major in Sustainability with a concentration in Policy & Economics and a Political Science Minor. During the school year, Rachel is involved in Marine Science Club, Student Action Volunteers for the Environment, and the Political Science Society. She also works with her university's food bank to fight food insecurity on campus and volunteers with her local Citizens' Climate Lobby chapter. In her free time, Rachel enjoys hiking, camping, and collecting houseplants.
  • Katie attends the University of San Francisco where she is double-majoring in International Studies and Environmental Studies. She has worked as an environmental education intern and enjoys working with kids in her tutoring position. Katie is interested in global sustainability, as well as environmental education and policy. In her free time, Katie enjoys playing tennis and baking. 
  • Rachel attends the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University (CSBSJU), where she studies environmental studies and political science. Rachel is actively engaged with her school's documentary team, Extending the Link, and with her on-campus job as a Student Advancement Ambassador. Rachel has worked on many fundraising projects and environmental campaigns at CSBSJU, and she hopes to pursue a career either in environmental policy or in the environmental non-profit sector. Rachel also enjoys reading novels, swimming in Minnesota's many lakes, and road tripping to national parks. 
  • Seyram is a rising sophomore at Denison University and majors in Environmental Studies. On campus, Seyram is actively engaged in the African Student Association (ASA) club. She enjoys participating in community service projects such as Care4AChild and other environmental advocacy projects. She hopes to pursue a career in waste management to help with the pollution crisis in her home country; Ghana. In her free time, Seyram enjoys listening to Afrobeat music and taking photographs of her environment.
  • Sloane is a rising senior at Colby College. She is majoring in Environmental Science with a focus in Aquatic Ecology and minoring in Physics and Economics. On campus Sloane works as a physics teaching assistant and EcoRep. She is also a member of the rowing team and Colby Outing Club. Sloane has previously worked in environmental and outdoor education with the New England Aquarium and the Nantahala Outdoor Center and hopes to pursue a career in natural resource management or environmental justice. Sloane enjoys skiing, cooking, and whitewater rafting.
  • Born and raised in Maryland, Lea Njosa is a recent graduate from Bridgewater College. She received her B.A. in Global Studies with a minor in music. On campus, Lea was involved in several organizations including the Model United Nations, Student Council, Student Financial Support Foundation, campus newspaper, and many more. Lea enjoys attending her local ministry and reading in her free time.​​
  • Tommy is a rising senior at Tufts University. He is majoring in biology and environmental studies. At Tufts, Tommy is an athlete on the men’s track and field team and does biomedical science research with a local nonprofit. He is very interested in the intersection between the environment and public health, and hopes to use this interest in a career in medicine. Aside from school, he loves to ski and explore Boston with his friends!
  • My name is Sophie Stein and I am a sophomore at Bates College. I am a Global Environmental Policy major, with a concentration in Political Economy. On campus I am an active member of the Bates Outing Club and Environmental Coalition! This summer, in addition to working with Engage Globally, I also look forward to doing some Environmental Studies research through the department at my college, as well as work for Defend Our Health; a Portland Maine based Environmental Health NGO. I am excited to gain tools this summer to help me in eventually pursuing a Fulbright scholarship, and hopefully a job as an Environmental Lawyer one day. Outside of academics, I love hiking, climbing, surfing and mountain biking!

  • ​​Hannah attends The University of Miami. She is majoring in Public Relations and Sport Administration with a minor in Marketing. On campus Hannah works for the University of Miami Sugarcanes and the ACC network. Hannah’s dream career is working in social media for NASCAR or environmental sustainability in sports. Hannah enjoys art and spending time at the beach.
  • Adilene Sandoval attends Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. She is double majoring in Environmental Studies and Sociology with a concentration in Global Environment Politics. On campus Adilene is actively engage in diversity and inclusion environmental justice initiatives through Latinos Unidos and the Environmental Collision. Adilene also volunteers with community food security programs, including Presente Maine, and hopes to pursue a career in environmental global politics. Adilene enjoys early sunrises and evening sunsets, gardening, spending time in the outdoors, meditating, and petting dogs.
